Chinese stun German women
![]() China's Long Fengyu takes on Fanny Rinne of Germany
China 2-1 Germany
Olympic newcomers China served up an upset in the women's hockey with a shock victory over Champions Trophy runners-up Germany. The Germans were stunned by two penalty corner conversions by China's Zhou Wanfeng in the second minute and again by Cheng Hui in the 49th. Germany hit back in the second half and Inga Moeller scored a field goal in the 60th minute. Playing a tight-marking game, the hardworking Chinese denied their fancied rivals time and space after gaining an upper-hand early in the contest. The goal changed the complexion of the match as the Chinese began displaying more confidence in moving out of their positions. "We were the last team to get a ticket into the Olympic Games, and we started with the mentality that we are working our way from 10th to first," said Chinese forward Jiuyan Wang. "We are a hard-working team and have prepared well as a group." China now top Pool D with six points from three matches, with Germany in second spot with five points from three matches and New Zealand in third with four points from two matches.
