Kerly: I'm gutted
![]()
Britain were thoroughly humilated by Pakistan and former Olympic champion hockey star Sean Kerly finds it almost impossible to see anything positive about the performance.
I've witnessed the worst result Britain's men have ever had in the Olympics and I'm gutted. We need something positive to say about British hockey today but I'm finding it difficult to find anything. I'm feeling very frustrated and I was only watching. I have watched four games of hockey involving Britain and today the women's team didn't show the same fight they did against Australia and I think they need to work hard and really fight hard. One thing we're good at as a nation is working hard and the women didn't really take the game to the Argentinians, they seemed to play without passion. Fear
As for the men, it was rather humiliating for them and the guys' faces at the press conference afterwards told the story. The Pakistani strike force had an unbelievably successful strike rate. We had 20 attempts on goal and managed one goal, they had 12 shots at goals and scored eight times. In terms of possession and territory there was little to choose between the two teams. It all happened in the semi-circle. Rubbish We were rubbish at finishing and they were good. Sport at this level is all about belief, it's all about creating chances and if you miss a few times, being confident enough to try again. Britain have a short-corner specialist in Calum Giles but he never seemed to be on the pitch at the right time.
Whenever he was on the pitch we didn't have any short corners, and whenever he went off we won them. But too often when you have a specialist like Calum the tendency is to rely on him to get the goals and not the team, although we were inadequate at short corners without somebody like him there. Both teams, men and women now have to try and pick themselves up. The men have three games left, the women have two and nothing less than maximum points is going to be good enough.
