Knee injury rules out Moceanu

Dominique Moceanu was just 14 when she competed in Atlanta
Dominique Moceanu, the youngest member of the Magnificent Seven of 1996, has withdrawn from the US Olympic trials because of a bone chip in her right knee.

Moceanu, 18, had surgery on the same knee last year.

She doesn't know what she wants to do - but she's certainly not talking about retirement
  Moceanu's coach Mary Lee Tracy
Her coach, Mary Lee Tracy, said: "The hardest part after talking to her was her saying 'I've worked so hard. I've put so much into this comeback'."

Although initial tests did not show any problems, the injury was discovered when doctors consulted an orthopaedic surgeon.

The chip had dislodged itself, preventing Moceanu from even being able to bend or straighten her knee.

She is expected to have surgery next week.

Moceanu becomes the second of the five still competing members of the Magnificent Seven to drop out of the national trials, after Jaycie Phelps withdrew last week because of chronic knee problems.

"She just kind of needs to grieve this," Tracy said.

"She doesn't know what she wants to do. But she's certainly not talking about retirement."
