Zamarano at the double for Chile
![]() Ivan Zamorano was Chile's two-goal hero
Chile 2-0 USA
Inter Milan striker Ivan Zamorano hit two second-half goals to secure Chile the bronze medal in the Olympic football tournament at the expense of USA. The losing semi-finalists scrapped out an uninspiring play-off, which only came to life midway through the second half when Zamarano broke the deadlock from the penalty spot. American defender Danny Califf was ajudged to have brought down Chilean substitute Sebastian Gonzalez on 69 minutes and Zamorano sent goalkeeper Brad Friedel the wrong way from the spot to put Chile in control. Zamorano was just as decisive six minutes from time, when he sealed Chile's first-ever football medal with his sixth goal of the tournament. The striker started and finished the move that saw off the American challenge to give Chile their first Olympic medal since Alfons de Iruarrizaga won silver in the men's skeet shooting in Seoul 12 years ago. For most of the opening hour, the game was a tedious midfield battle, but USA could have broken the deadlock in the first half, only for Josh Wolff to fire straight at Chile's veteran keeper Nelson Tapia when it looked easier to score.
