Cuba feature strongly in quarters
![]() Cuba's Martinez lands a right hook on Frances Blain
Cuba lost light-heavyweight Isael
Alvarez on day nine of the boxing competition - but will have 10 of their 12 fighters in the
quarter-finals of the tournament.
Their great rivals United States head into the last eight series, starting on Tuesday, with seven fighters progressing after light-heavyweight Olanda Anderson was their fifth casualty at the Games. Russia have the second largest contingent in the quarters with eight ahead of Ukraine and the Americans. Alvarez was stopped by Kazakhstan's Olzhas Orazaliyev in the third round of their light-heavyweight bout. Alvarez had his right eye closed during the first round by punches and had three inspections by the ringside doctor before he was ruled unfit to continue 38 seconds into the third round to put Orazaliyev into the quarter-finals. Anderson, having his first fight at the Games, fell to Rudolf Kraj of the Czech Republic 13-12. "I would have loved to have this one, but we'll still be alright going into the quarters," said head US coach Tom Mustin. USA got two more of their boxers into the quarter-finals in the afternoon session, while getting further off-side with the fight crowd. Navarro will fight Jerome Thomas in the quarter-finals after the Frenchman outclassed Burkina Faso's Drissa Tou inside two rounds. In the flyweight division, Cuba's Diogenes Luna Martinez beat Willy Blain of France 25-14.
