Steve Cram MBE
![]()
Born in Gateshead in 1960, Steve Cram is one of the world's most successful middle distance athletes of all time.
In a career spanning three decades, his many achievements include six gold medals at Commonwealth, European and World Championship level and a silver medal at the Olympics. In 1985 he broke world records at 1500m, 2000m, and the mile all within 19 days; the latter lasting almost nine years. In 1983 he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year and graduated from Northumbria University with a BA in Sports Studies. Three years later he was awarded the MBE. Steve began working in broadcasting in 1995 as an athletics commentator for Eurosport, covering two World Championships, the European Championships and the Olympic Games. He has been a regular contributor to BBC Radio 5 Live including hosting the popular 606 and Sunday Sport programmes and also presented a series on The History of Athletics. A vital part of 5 Live's 1996 Olympic team, Steve re-joined the BBC in 1999 primarily as an Athletics commentator. His life outside broadcasting has seen him sit on the English Sports Council as the Minister's Nominee and a member of the former Northern Council for Sport and Recreation. In May 2000, he was also appointed Chariman of the English Institute of Sport.
