Sal looks forward - and remembers!
Sally Gunnell
Former 400m hurdles gold medallist and BBC Olympic expert Sally Gunnell looks forward to Friday's track action.

I have to pay tribute to Darren Campbell for his fantastic performance in the 200m.

To have two British guys in the final of the 200m, with Darren and Christian Malcolm, was the highlight of Thursday's athletics action.

Darren looked mean and in business before the start and he ran a great race. He ran a fantastic bend and at one point I thought he had gold.

He had tears in his eyes at the end. It was wonderful to see.

He came out here saying he wanted to do well in the 100m, but for me he has so much more strength for the 200m.

Overshadowed

All the sprinters want to be good at them both, and he has proved that he is - to get into the final of the 100m and then get silver in the 200m is pretty good going.

That overshadowed Marion Jones' performance to win the womens' 200m as far as I'm concerned. It was a bit of a demonstration run. She is so far ahead of everyone else.

It couldn't have been easy for her - she has been under a lot of strain with everything that's happened this week - but she has so much basic talent and speed.

She is not the best technician out there, although she has been working on things like her starts this year, but her talent is enormous. She drives so hard out of the block and round the bend, but yet she still has the strength at the end.

If anything I was looking for a little quicker time from Jones, but there was still a hell of a long gap between them.

Pauline Davis-Thompson, who finished second, impressed me, but it was two races out there, really.

Jones now has another three events to concentrate on. It's the long jump on Friday, which everyone is saying is her weak event, but I think if anything is going to trip her up in her quest for five gold medals it is the 4 x 100m relay.

That's not because of her, but because the American team does not appear that strong.

They haven't got any other runner into either the 200m final or the 100m final. For them, it will be about how much of a super-woman Marion can be. She may be able to make the difference herself in that.

She is a good 400m runner as well, and I think she will prove that in the 4 x 400m on the final day, although again there weren't that many Americans in that final either.

Tremendous strength

It will be very interesting to watch the last leg of that relay, which could pitch Jones against Cathy Freeman. I'm sure if Jones was in the 400m, she would have been up there and pushing Cathy.

Freeman was not really in the 200m final. She hasn't got the basic speed and she doesn't work at things like coming out of the blocks because she doesn't need to in the 400m.

But she has tremendous strength, and you can see that in the last 50m of the 200m when the others start to tire and she begins to catch them up.

I'm particularly looking forward to the final of the women's 1,500m on Friday. It should be a good race and we have two British girls going in the final, Kelly Holmes and Hayley Tullett.

In particular, you can never rule Kelly out. She is having an amazing games and her confidence is on a high.

There is no reason why she can't a bronze medal if she gets in there, but the real threats have got to be Gaby Szabo and the Algerian, Nouriah Benida-Merah.
