Champion breezes into final
![]() Gebrselassie: Awesome form
World record-holder and reigning Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie breezed into the 10,000m final on Friday night with a dominant run.
The Ethiopian track legend out-sprinted Kenyans Patrick Ivuti and John Korir, plus compatriot Assefa Mezgebu, on the home straight to clock 27:50.01secs. The four Africans broke away midway through the race and never looked like being cuaght by the pursuing pack. Young Briton Andres Jones ran a credible 28:11.20secs to give himself a chance of making the final as a fastest loser, but Rob Denmark suffered badly and trailed home a desperate 13th, nearly a minute behind the leaders. Jones finished ninth, one outside the automatic qualifying spots. His hopes of a final place were thwarted, though, when the second heat proved a much faster race and provided all the fastest loser spots. |
