New attack on flame
Police guards have been deployed for the flame
Police guards have been deployed for the flame
The Olympic flame has suffered its third attack after a man grabbed it and tried to throw it into the sea at Sydney.

The torch was snatched from former world surfing champion Tom Carroll in the coastal town of Kiama, south of Sydney, but the guilty party was wrestled to the ground.

A police spokesman said the man was taken away for questioning.

The torch is due to reach the outskirts of southern Sydney late on Monday and will be paraded round the city until the opening ceremony on Friday.

Two other attempts have been made to disrupt the torch's months-long journey from Greece involving a relay of more than 10,000 runners.

Last month a high school student tried to put out the torch with a fire extinguisher when it passed through the northern New South Wales town of Maclean.

In July, a teenager unsuccessfully tried to grab the torch from a runner.
