Rock qualifies with solid performance

Olympic 400m freestyle bronze medallist Jo Jackson capped a great day for Britain in the pool by qualifying for Tuesday's 200m freestyle semi-final.

She is joined by Caitlin McClatchey who qualified behind Federica Pelligrini, the Italian setting a new world record of one minute 55.45 seconds.

Hannah Miley and Keri-Anne Payne are in the the 200m medley semi-finals.

America's Michael Phelps set a new Olympic record in the 200m butterfly and GB's Michael Rock also qualified.

Phelps trailed for three-quarters of the race before picking up the pace down the final length to touch in a time of 1:53.70 - the second fastest of the year.

"I don't want to say I cruised it, but I swam it the way I wanted to," said Phelps.

"It doesn't matter until the finals. As long as you have a lane, you're in it."

Britain's Rock recorded a new personal best of 1:55.55 to finish ninth overall and earn himself a place in the last 16.

Pellegrini went some way to making up for missing a medal in the 400m freestyle by eclipsing the world's best in the 200m freestyle.

The 400m freestyle was won by Britain's Rebecca Adlington, with Jackson finishing third behind America's Katie Hoff.

Jackson said: "I found that tough after this morning, but it gets me into the semi-finals. I need to recover now and get into shape for the next phase.

"It's been such an emotional day after the medal and I now need to focus again. This morning was amazing but I feel there's more to come."

Adlington and Jackson's efforts appear to have spurred on the rest of the GB team.

McClatchey, who set a personal best 1:56.97 to reach the semi finals, said: "What the girls did this morning was so inspiring, and this result has filled me with confidence."

Miley recorded a time of 2:11.72 in the 200m individual medley to beat a field including world record holder Stephanie Rice, of Australia, and Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry.

Her time was just 0.17 seconds behind quickest qualifier, Alicia Coutts of Australia, while Payne qualified 14th fastest.

Payne said: "This team is building momentum all the time and it's great to be a part of that.

"You can feel it flowing throughout the team and it's giving us all confidence."

Tuesday's swimming begins at 0300 BST.
