Denes Varga's shot in the last seconds secured Hungary a 10-10 draw against Montenegro in the men's preliminaries of the Olympic water polo.

Tamas Kasas had given the Hungarians a 9-8 advantage before Montenegro took the lead in the final minute.

Elsewhere, Duskov Pijetlovic scored three goals in the third quarter as Serbia defeated Germany 11-7.

Top seeds Croatia beat Italy 11-7, while the US defeated China 8-4 and Spain beat Canada 16-6.

In the day's other match, Australia were comfortable 12-8 winners over Greece.

Two-time defending champions Hungary, who beat Serbia-Montenegro in the Athens final four years ago, could meet Montenegro again in the final, which takes place on 24 August.

Hungary coach Denes Kemeny admitted his side, who held a three-point lead in the third period, had been lapse in defence.

"We paid a high price for those mistakes," said Kemeny. "We made too many mistakes, but we are pleased with the outcome."

Montenegro coach Petar Porobic hailed the draw as a "great" result for his side, saying: "We played better in the end and were are happy with the result - it is hard to even draw with Hungary, especially after being down three goals."
