Swimmer Foster regains 50m record

Mark Foster
Mark Foster last claimed the 50m freestyle British record in 2001

Swimmer Mark Foster won back his British record and rose to ninth in the world rankings after winning the 50m freestyle in Zagreb.

Foster became the first British man to dip under 22 seconds, wrestling back his record from Simon Burnett at the Golden Bear meet.

The 38-year-old, who will compete in his fifth Olympics in Beijing, clocked 21.96secs at the meet in Croatia.

His previous best time had been 22.13, set in 2001.

Breaking the 22-second barrier launches Foster into the world's top 10 after a year which has seen the world record traded between Eamon Sullivan and Alain Bernard with the former the current holder with a time of 21.28.
