Foster will compete at his fifth Olympics in Beijing this summer

Great Britain's Mark Foster can earn the 47th international medal of his career at Friday's World Short Course Swimming Championships in Manchester.

Foster, who will be 38 in May, has qualified for the final of the 50m freestyle, and also races in the semi-finals of the 50m butterfly event.

The Bath-based veteran could drop out of the fly, having qualified last, but should earn a medal in the freestyle.

Six British records fell in Friday morning's heats at the MEN Arena.

But with European and world records tumbling in the first two days of competition, GB's buoyant stars will expect to produce even lower times in the evening session, with 30 medals on offer.

Southport's Fran Halsall qualified fastest for the 100m freestyle final, but has not been named for the 50m butterfly final despite qualifying in seventh.

Lizzie Simmonds, 17, must face Zimbabwe's in-form Kirsty Coventry in the 200m backstroke final.

Edinburgh's Kris Gilchrist has a strong medal chance in the 200m breaststroke, as do Aberdeen pair Robbie Renwick and David Carry in the 400m freestyle.

Joanne Jackson qualified second for her 400m freestyle final, and Liam Tancock can push for his second gold of the competition in the 200m individual medley, for which James Goddard also qualified.

The women's 4x100m medley relay squad - Mel Marshall, Kirsty Balfour, Ellen Gandy and Caitlin McClatchey - took four seconds off the British record to qualify first for their final.

Tancock, Goddard, Renwick and Simmonds also set new national marks in the third day's morning heats, as did Kate Haywood.
