Reigning world champions Canada look the eight to beat but Great Britain - bronze medallists a year ago - could upset them and stand a good chance of a medal of some colour.
Considered GB's third men's boat last year, it was upgraded for 2008, with the arrivals of Matt Langridge and Colin Smith - world bronze-winners in the pair last year - and veteran Alex Partridge.
Partridge, who suffered a punctured lung in the weeks before the Athens Olympics and watched his crew-mates win gold in the coxless four, was dropped from the four this year after an inconsistent winter.
The eight are also aspiring entertainers - watch out for their musical attempts on YouTube.
Rumour has it the best of their videos will be released on the day of the Olympic final, 17 August. The race starts at 1030 BST.
