Phillips Idowu to make up for Beijing at London 2012

Idowu lies low ahead of world title defence

Hackney-born triple jumper Phillips Idowu says he is focused on making up for Olympic disappointment in Beijing at the London 2012 Games.

The 32-year-old won silver in 2008 and is currently preparing for Saturday's UK Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham.

He told BBC London 94.9: "Straight after Beijing I was thinking, 'OK I have to win the next Olympics now', because I was massively disappointed.

"Now I have got to the point where I can think about it."

The World and European champion added: "I do have everything else there is to win but I need to just complete the set and pick up that Olympic gold medal."

As much as he is looking forward to competing in front of a home crowd, Idowu insists his children will not be watching at the Olympic Stadium when he competes in London.

"Having them in the stadium is a slight distraction, because I go into father-mode, so my mind isn't completely on the job.

"When it comes to London it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. So I will allow them to watch other events, but on the day I am competing in my final they won't be in the stadium."

Now I have got to the point where, because I have a plan set to lead into the Olympics I can think about it

Idowu says journalists have been asking him about the 2012 Games ever since London won the right to stage them.

But it is only now that he has allowed himself to start thinking about them.

"It just went out of my mind and I just started thinking about the following year [2009] and winning the World Championships. From then its just been a year-to-year process, and the only time I would think about it was when I was asked by journalists.

"But now I have got to the point where, because I have a plan set to lead into the Olympics I can think about it.

"When I say I go to a championships expecting to be on the top of the podium, that is what you guys expect of me anyway, so I have to go out and make sure I do that."

Idowu will take on his old rival Christian Olsson of Sweden in Birmingham on Saturday, but has decided not to compete at the European Indoor Championships so he can concentrate on the World Championships in South Korea.

You can hear from Phillips Idowu on 'Towards 2012' on BBC London 94.9 on Sunday, 20 February from 1400 GMT.
