Jersey's Beckie Herbert has missed out on a place in the GB hockey team for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Herbert, who won a bronze medal with England at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, lost her place in the squad earlier this year.

She was in the team that drew with Argentina in a two-game series in May.

But the 21-year-old failed to make the squad that won the Setanta Trophy, after beating Germany 4-1 in the final, in Ireland on 15 June.

Herbert, who plays for Leicester, was the only islander with a chance of being selected to represent Great Britain in Beijing.

It means for the second Games in a row there are no competitors from Jersey going to an Olympics.

The last islander to go to a games was swimmer Simon Militis who competed in Sydney in 2000.
