Great Britain started their Setanta Sports Trophy hockey campaigns with two defeats in Dublin.
The women lost 2-1 to Olympic champions Germany while the men slipped to a 1-0 defeat by Canada after Peter Short netted in the 37th minute.
The women were tied at 1-1 after Susie Gilbert converted a penalty corner for her first GB goal but then Rachel Walker was sent to the sin-bin.
Germany's Marion Roadwald took full advantage and netted the winner.
GB women's head coach Danny Kerry said: "We had a very shaky first half where Germany dominated but had a slightly better second half.
"I'm happy with what we did given Germany are our opponents in the first game in Beijing."
GB men's manager Pete Nicholson said: "We made good opportunities for ourselves throughout the game, but their keeper was in phenomenal form."
