World champions Germany beat Sweden 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the women's football tournament courtesy of two extra-time strikes in Shenyang.

Defender Kerstin Garefrekes headed home on 104 minutes before Simone Laudehr struck on 126 minutes to seal the win.

Germany now face Brazil, who reached the semi-finals by beating Norway 2-1 with goals from Daniela and Marta.

The United States beat Canada 2-1 with Natasha Kai's extra-time winner and will play Japan, who beat China 2-0.

Germany, who won last year's world title with six straight clean sheets, have not conceded a goal in 10 major tournament matches.

Their clash with Sweden was a rematch of the 2003 World Cup final, which Germany won 2-1.

Germany also beat Sweden 1-0 in the bronze-medal match at the Athens Games four years ago but have never reached an Olympic final.

The semi-final against Brazil is a rematch of last year's World Cup final - the teams drew 0-0 in their Olympic opener.

Brazil were always on top against Norway in Tianjin, with Daniela making the breakthrough a minute before half-time with a powerful 35-yard drive.

Two-time Fifa Player of the Year Marta made it 2-0 in the 57th minute before Siri Norby converted a penalty seven minutes from time.

In Shanghai, a thunderstorm forced the players from the field after 20 minutes with the United States leading 1-0.

Canada, who have only beaten their North American neighbours four times in 44 meetings, equalised soon after play resumed almost two hours later.

The score remained locked 1-1 until the final whistle, but substitute striker Kai scored the decider in extra-time.

In a one-sided affair in Qinhuangdao, Homare Sawa and Yuki Nagasato scored the goals that saw Japan past hosts China.
