Siasia gives up on Taye Taiwo

Taiwo wants to go to China but Marseille have not released him

Nigeria's Olympic men's football coach Samson Siasia has decided to drop Taye Taiwo from the squad for Beijing.

The defender's French club Marseille have been reluctant to to release him for the Games.

With Nigeria beginning their Olympic campaign on Thursday against Holland, Siasia feels that time has run out.

"Even if he comes here now, it'll take him up to the quarter-finals before he can play, with the time difference and the weather to adjust to," said Siasia.

"It's just waste of time, I'm distraught.

"I've been trying to reach him and I don't know what exactly is going on."

Portugal-based Olufemi Oladapo will replace Taiwo.

Taiwo has insisted that Marseille have refused to release him, despite him being under-23 and Fifa rules stating that he should be allowed to play at the Olympics.

Last week the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) threatened action against Marseille if they did not release Taiwo.

The NFF said it would report the club to world football's governing body if he is not allowed to travel to Beijing.
