Mariel Zagunis defeated team-mate Sada Jacobson 15-8 to win her second successive Olympic sabre title and the US's first gold of the Games.

Becca Ward completed a clean sweep of the medals for the Americans by beating Russia's Sofiya Velikaya 15-14 in the bronze-medal match.

China's silver medallist from Athens, Tan Xue, disappointed home fans by losing to Velikaya in the last eight.
