Sarsekbayev outclassed Banteaux in Sunday's final
|
Kazakhstan's Bakhyt Sarsekbayev claimed Olympic gold in the welterweight division with a comprehensive 18-9 victory over Cuba's Carlos Banteaux.
Banteaux was just 1-0 ahead after the first round, but Sarsekbayev took control from then on, scoring at will with crunching right hooks to the body.
And Sarsekbayev picked off Banteaux as the Cuban tried to rescue the bout.
The result means that Cuba have failed to win a gold medal despite having eight fighters in the semi-finals.
Cuba finished with four silver and four bronze, the first time they have failed to win a gold since 1968 - other than 1984 and 1988 when they didn't compete.
China's Hanati Silamu and South Korea's Kim Jung Joo won the bronze medals.
