Video - Rooney through to 400m final

Britain's Martyn Rooney had to dig deep for a sprint finish to qualify for Thursday's men's 400m final in Beijing.

The 21-year-old looked out of the race at the 300m mark but caught his rivals to finish his heat second in a new personal best of 44.60 seconds.

Welshman Christian Malcolm ran a season's best of 20.25 seconds to reach Wednesday's 200m final.

While Jade Johnson reached the long jump final and Goldie Sayers easily qualified for the javelin final.

Rooney appeared to be going backwards fast in the third heat of the 400m semis but the Croydon athlete called on a reserve of strength to make the final as the fourth fastest qualifier.

The 21-year-old, competing in his first Olympics, shaved 0.12 seconds off his PB in the process.

But team-mate Andrew Steele could not quite muster the same strength after his build-up to the Games was hampered by a hamstring injury and finished eighth in the second heat in 45.59.

Americans Jeremy Wariner, the defending champion, and LaShawn Merritt look set to continue their rivalry in the final with Merritt clocking 44.12 to advance and Wariner coasting through in 44.15.

There was mixed news for Britain in the men's 200m semi-finals as Welshman Christian Malcolm edged into the final but Marlon Devonish bowed out.

After battling back from a demoralising series of injuries Malcolm, 28, clocked his best time since 2005 as he finished fourth in the first heat in 20.25 secs.

Devonish, who revealed he needed more time to recover from illness, crossed the line seventh in the following heat in 20.57.

Emily Freeman squeezed into Wednesday's 200m semi-finals after finishing third in the fourth heat in 22.95 seconds.

The 27-year-old from Yorkshire told the BBC afterwards: "It's the Olympics and it's a big thing for me so I'm relieved.

"I don't want to let myself down but I'm in the semis and hopefully I will come back stronger and enjoy it."

Jamaica's Sherone Simpson, the joint 100m silver medallist, was the fastest qualifier through to the semi-finals, winning Freeman's heat in 22.60 secs.

Jade Johnson scraped into Friday's long jump final by just 2cm after recording jumps of 6.33m and 6.15m in her first two rounds.

However, she managed 6.61m with the penultimate leap of the entire competition to see her through as the 11th of 12 finalists but was frustrated by her performance.

"Maybe tomorrow I might be happy," said the 28-year-old. "I'm in the final but right now I'm still a bit mad with myself.

I'm trying to create momentum rather than coming out all guns blazing in the early season and then dropping away

Goldie Sayers

"When have I ever had an easy ride? Never. Once I just accept that I'm never going to have an easy ride I'll be fine.

"I believed I could do it on the first jump but then you start having the doubts and then you kind of panic and go through every single emotion you can possibly think of."

American Brittney Reese was the best of the qualifiers with 6.87m.

Heptathlon silver medallist Lyudmila Blonska, defending champion Tatyana Lebedeva and former heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft also made it through.

Goldie Sayers, who has been suffering from a stomach bug, started solidly with a throw of 60.79m but improved in the second round to make up for the disappointment of missing last year's World Championship final.

Afterwards she said: "That's job done, I'm pleased. I've got the feel for the track and I'm looking forward to the final.

"I'm just looking to perform to the best of my ability so I can walk off the track like I have done today and be satisfied with what I've done.

"I think 64 or 65 metres could make a medal and I'm capable of that so I'm looking to throw as far as I possibly can and if I can walk away with a medal I'll be ecstatic."

The Czech Republic's Barbora Spotakova led qualifying for Thursday's final with 67.69m.

Jo Pavey decided against doubling up in the 5,000m just four days after finishing 12th in a punishing 10,000m final.

The 34-year-old warmed up at the track ahead of the heats but decided to pull out because of a combination of fatigue and a stomach bug.

The 10,000m Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba cruised into Friday's 5,000m final in 15 minutes 09.89 seconds with fellow Ethiopian, and defending champion, Meseret Defar was the fastest qualifier in 14:56.32.

There was also disappointment for 110m hurdlers Andy Turner and Allan Scott, who both failed to reach Wednesday's semi-finals.

Turner, the European bronze medallist, was just run out of his heat, finishing fifth in 13.53 secs while Scott was sixth in the third heat in 13.66.

American David Oliver was the fastest qualifier in 13.16 as Cuba's world record holder Dayron Robles also eased through.

In Tuesday's finals, Christine Ohuruogu claimed a stunning 400m gold while Germaine Mason started the athletics medal haul with a surprise high jump silver.

Sarah Claxton was unable to add more silverware in the final of the 100m hurdles, the 28-year-old finishing eighth in a time of 12.94 seconds.

Andy Baddeley was also run out of the 1500m final, finishing ninth in 3:35.37.
