22/8/08: Blonska has been stripped of silver after a positive doping test. Fountain was handed silver and Russia's Tatiana Chernova bronze. Sotherton moved up to fourth.

Ukraine's Nataliia Dobrynska captured the Olympic heptathlon title in Beijing as Britain's Kelly Sotherton missed out on a medal.

Sotherton, the Athens bronze medallist, had a poor long jump and javelin and could only finish fifth.

The winner, who set five personal bests over the two-day competition, finished on 6517 points.

Her compatriot Lyudmila Blonska took silver ahead of overnight leader Hyleas Fountain of the United States.

Dobrynska, who trailed Fountain by 64 points after the first day, seized the initiative with a personal best of 6.63m in the long jump.

She then extended her advantage with her best-ever javelin throw (48.60m) and although she struggled in the 800m, finishing last, it was enough to give the 26-year-old the Olympic crown.

Blonska, who served a two-year ban after testing positive for steroids in 2003, finished with 6700 points to snatch silver from Fountain, who managed 6619.

Sotherton, who had been tipped for a medal in Beijing, started the day in third but a below-par long jump of 6.33m saw her slip down to fifth.

She managed 6.21m in the first round but was not impressed and went straight over to coach Aston Moore in the stands to find out what was going wrong.

Her second round of 6.33m was a slight improvement but was still well down on her personal best of 6.68m.

Once again, the javelin proved her downfall with a best throw of just 37.66m to keep her in fifth although it was much better than the 28.59m she managed when finishing third in the World Championships in Osaka last year .

She finished positively on the two-lap race behind Russia's Tatiana Chernova in a new personal best time of 2:07.34 but it only gave her 6517 points, 102 points off a bronze medal.

"I know I am better than this but if my long jump and javelin had been better it might have been different," said Sotherton.

"I'm pleased to score higher than I did last year at the Worlds and I'm not one to give up and I know I have more to give."
