Video - Polish 'putter plunders gold
Tomasz Majewski of Poland caused an upset when he claimed gold in the men's shot put on day one of athletics action at Beijing's National Stadium.
Majewski, 26, threw a personal best of 21.51 metres to finish ahead of American Christian Cantwell.
Cantwell snatched silver with his last effort of 21.09m, with Andrei Miknevich of Belarus taking bronze with 21.05m.
American Adam Nelson, silver medallist at the past two Olympic Games, was eliminated after three foul throws.
Defending champion Yuriy Bilonog of Ukraine finished sixth as the sport's old guard was overthrown.
Majewski, the first Pole to win gold in the event since Wladyslaw Komar in 1972, threw a personal best of 21.04m during qualifying before bettering that in the final.
His previous best result was bronze at the World Indoor Championships this year.
Cantwell's final throw relegated Canadian Dylan Armstrong down to fourth, but it was a disappointing showing from the US team, with Reese Hoffa down in seventh.
