Paul Hession will be disappointed by his run on Tuesday

Irish sprinter Paul Hession missed out on a place in Wednesday's 200 metres final after finishing fifth in his semi-final on Tuesday.

Hession needed a top-four finish to make the final but he was .13secs behind Britain's Christian Malcolm who claimed the final qualifying spot.

The Irishman finished in 20.38 seconds which was .08 outside his personal best and Irish record.

Churandy Martina of the Dutch Antilles won the semi-final in 20.11.

Zimbabwe's Brian Dzingai was second in 20.17 while American Walter Dix clocked 20.19.

Running in lane four, Hession didn't appear to get the best of starts and his bend also wasn't as smooth as his second-round heat which he had won in 20.32.

The Irishman knew he would have to run in the region of 20.20 to qualify and he will be disappointed with his performance - particularly given that he had landed the easier semi-final.
