Davies qualifies for 1500m final

David Davies

David Davies has successfully qualified for the Olympic 1500m freestyle final at the Water Cube in Beijing.

The Commonwealth champion smashed his season's best with a swim of 14 minutes 46.11 seconds to secure third placed in heat three.

Canadian Ryan Cochrane beat Grant Hackett's Olympic record to win the heat ahead of Russian Yuriy Prilukov.

But Aussie Hackett regained the record in the final heat with a swim of 14 minutes 38.92 seconds.

Davies, who won bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics, was fifth fastest in qualifying for Sunday's final at 0305 BST.

"That was unbelievable," Davies said.

"It was really hard work but it's expected. It's going to be tough, there's a lot of guys going for this final."

Hackett's swim was the second-fastest 1500m freestyle time ever boosting his chances of becoming the first man to win the same event at three straight Olympics.

"I had to go out there and swim a good pace," said Hackett.

"I was very surprised. I thought it was about seven seconds slower than the pace I was doing."

World championship silver medallist Prilukov was third fastest in a European record 14 minutes 41.13 secods ahead of Zhang and Barry's Davies.

Reigning world champion Mateusz Sawrymowicz of Poland missed out on the final after registering ninth-best 14 minutes 50.30 seconds.
