The Iraqi football team's inspired run to the semi-finals of the 2004 Olympic tournament was one of the sporting triumphs of the Athens Games.
But athletes' preparations for Beijing were thrown into chaos by a row between the Iraqi government and the International Olympic Committee.
Iraq's team was only cleared to compete at the last minute, and five athletes lost the chance to go to China after the deadline passed for registering in their events.
But a discus thrower and a sprinter will represent the war-torn nation. That they are unlikely to add to Iraq's historic tally of one bronze medal is of no concern.
