Countries to watch: Panama
Panama montage

With just two bronze medals in its Olympic history, the prospect of a first gold medal is causing palpitations in Panama.

Hopes rest on long-jumper Irving Saladino, 25, the world champion at the event who holds the longest jump of 2008.

A knee injury that forced him to miss six-weeks of pre-Olympics competition might derail Saladino's bid for gold.

Should he triumph in Beijing, however, watch for the celebrations in Ciudad de Colon, the city of his birth at the mouth of the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal.
