Louise Martin, the new chair of Sportscotland, has backed the decision to ban drugs offenders at the Beijing Olympics from the London 2012 games.
The IOC's decision to bar anyone banned for six months or more from the next Olympics comes into force on 1 July.
"I think it's absolutely tremendous, this is the way forward. It's long overdue," said Martin.
"Nobody, after doing a four-year ban from the next Olympics, will come back, or very few would."
Martin believes that the number of drugs-related controversies, such as involving British sprinter Dwain Chambers, has forced the Olympic governing body's hand.
"The IOC have always wanted to do something," she told BBC Radio Scotland's Sports Weekly.
"Now so much has happened and so many things have gone on from way back and have now come out. I think it's tremendous."
Martin also indicated her priorities after taking up the sportscotland role.
"I definitely want to raise the profile of sportscotland, because, as we know, it does not have a good profile at the moment," she said.
"I think over time, if we get the work right at grassroots levels, going back to communities, going back to schools, we'll be back to what we're good at.
I think it's about time we realised we're growing a nation of coach potatoes. Everyone is terrified to do any physical activity in case they get hurt

"It's all about building a team of people and the whole of Scotland should be part of that team.
"I think it's about time we realised we're growing a nation of couch potatoes. Everyone is terrified to do any physical activity in case they get hurt.
"We want to make sure everyone gets involved with sport in some way, whether it's as a spectator, or as a volunteer or just taking part and enjoying themselves.
"It will take some time, I know that, but I've got some thoughts on that."
