Peddle going for Paralympic gold

Peddle will compete at his sixth Paralympics this summer

Northamptonshire powerlifter Anthony Peddle believes he can win gold at this summer's Paralympics in Beijing.

The 37-year-old will represent Great Britain for what will be his sixth consecutive Paralympic Games.

Speaking to BBC Radio Northampton's Monday Night Sport programme, Peddle said he hopes to emulate his achievement in Sydney eight years ago.

"If I'm on my game hopefully I'll come back with a gold medal. That's my aim, we'll just have to see how it goes."

The Duston athlete made his Paralympic debut in Seoul in 1988 and won gold with a world record lift in Sydney in 2000.

Peddle was unable to successfully defend his title in Athens in 2004 due to a reoccurring shoulder injury.

Now back to full fitness, he is steadily climbing his way back up the rankings and will compete in the men's -48kg class.

The powerlifting events at the Games take place at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Gymnastics, starting on 9 September.
