Photos of 1908 memorabilia

The Olympic Games, London 1908

To mark the 100th anniversary of London first hosting the Olympics in 1908, the British Olympic Foundation gave BBC Sport access to its memorabilia from the Games

Great Britain's 1908 Olympic flag

Great Britain's 1908 Olympic flag adorns the wall of the British Olympic Association's boardroom. The Olympic Flag with the iconic rings had yet to be designed in 1908

Rules and regulations booklets

There were plenty of booklets outlining the rules and regulations, and although they didn't stop controversy at the time, they helped lay the foundations for subsequent Games

Starting pistols and stopwatch from the 1908 Olympic Games

The starting pistols and timing devices were somewhat different a century ago - these pistols have only just been returned to the BOA by the police after being made safe

The marathon route

The marathon was perhaps the most famous event - it was extended at the request of the royal family to start outside Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box in the Olympic Stadium

A certificate awarded to Johnny Hayes as recognition of his achievement in winning the marathon

Italy's Dorando Pietri crossed the finishing line first, but he was disqualified after receiving help from officials in the final yards and America's Johnny Hayes, who finished second, was awarded the title

Commemorative medals (top) and lapel badges for officials, competitors and stewards (bottom)

The process of handing out medals after races had not been introduced so a variety of badges and medals were awarded to winning and competing athletes at one ceremony on 25 July

Gold and silver medals from the yacht races - the medal depicts two women placing a laurel wreath on the head of the winner

Coloured vouchers were given to medal-winning athletes (red for first, dark blue for second and yellow for third) and they had to be exchanged for the appropriate medal at the appropriate time

Diploma of merit awarded at the 1908 Olympic Games

Diplomas of merit were also handed out to those with light blue vouchers but if you did not approach the right coloured desk with a matching ticket, you ran the risk of receiving no prize at all

The football used in the final of the 1908 Olympic competition, which has deflated over the years

Great Britain won the football tournament, beating Denmark 2-0 in the final with goals from Fred Chapman and Vivian Woodward in front of 8,000 spectators at the White City Olympic Stadium
