Davis retains 1000m skating title

American Shani Davis became the first man to successfully defend the Olympic 1,000m speed skating title with victory at the Richmond Oval.

A blistering final lap saw the world record holder eclipse South Korea's Tae-Bum Mo by 0.18 seconds and stop the clock in one minute 08.94 seconds.

Fellow American Chad Hedrick finished third in 1:09.32.

"Those last 300 meters were difficult. I was just trying to carry my speed and could feel it leaving me," said Davis.

"When you're a world champion or an Olympic champion, you get this little thing on your back called a target.

"To go out there and win the 1,000m twice is truly amazing."
