China awarded 3,000m relay title

South Korea's Cho Ha-Ri

Gold for China in 3000m short track skating

China were awarded the women's 3,000m relay gold medal in a new world record time after defending Olympic champions South Korea were disqualified.

The Koreans, who won the previous four Olympic titles, were thrown out after Kim Min-Jung impeded Sun Linlin at a handover with six laps to go.

The controversial move put Korea ahead of China to apparently finish first.

But their joy was short-lived as China were handed gold in four minutes, 06.61 seconds from Canada and United States.

The time knocked half a second off China's previous world best of 4:07.179, set in Salt Lake City in October 2008.

Led by newly-crowned 500m Olympic champion Wang Meng and 1,500m gold medallist Zhou Yang, the Chinese team, which also featured Zhang Hui, were in a constant battle with the Koreans and looked destined to finish second until the referee intervened.

"I wasn't surprised because in short track anything can happen. Whatever the judges say I will accept," said Wang.

"I was in charge of the first half of the relay and Zhou was in charge of second half. Everyone stayed calm through the race and I'm so proud of them."
