Russia women defend biathlon crown

Russia won their third Olympic women's biathlon relay title after Olga Zaitseva easily protected their massive lead on the final leg.

Olga Medvedtseva practically secured the win on the third leg after her quick shooting gave Zaitseva a 45-second head start on the last exchange.

Zaitseva secured the win despite shaky shooting on the last position.

Sandrine Bailly overtook Germany's Andrea Henkel near the end to give France the silver.

The Russian team, which also included Svetlana Sleptsova and Anna Bogaliy-Titovets, finished the 4x6km race in one hour, nine minutes, 36.3 seconds.

In the relay format, the skiers can shoot eight times at the five targets at each position.

However, only five bullets can be loaded at a time, meaning they have to spend time reloading if they miss.

After using all eight rounds, they have to ski a 150m penalty loop for each remaining target.

Zaitseva was immediately mobbed by her teammates in the finish area as the Russian team went some way to making up for a disappointing Games so far.
