The South West will be a training base for at least one Olympic team, after Canada's divers adopted the Plymouth Life Centre as its pre-Games camp.

The Canadian diving team - eight coaches, 12 divers and their support staff - will use the new centre for a week in July 2012.

They will also visit the centre before the Diving World Series, which takes place in February next year.

The £46.5m Plymouth Life Centre is due to be completed this autumn.

The new centre will offer some of the best aquatics facilities, including one of the top four diving pools in the country.

The Canadian team were reported to be particularly impressed by the finish on the centre's diving boards, which replicates the boards they will find at the London games.

The announcement followed discussions between Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Diving and Diving Canada.

Plymouth Diving and Great Britain coach Andy Banks, who coaches Tom Daley, was also involved in attracting the Canadian team to Plymouth.

"The Canadian diving team is one of the best in the world and they will be serious contenders for rostrum places in London 2012," he said.

"They have seen and used facilities all over the world and for them to be impressed with the Plymouth Life Centre is praise indeed.

"I know that Plymouth can organise a great training camp for them and I am sure they will be well pleased with their choice."
