Katerina Thanou denied Marion Jones' Olympic 100m gold

Katerina Thanou has been denied Marion Jones' 100m gold medal from the Sydney Olympics in 2000 by the International Olympic Committee.

Jones was stripped of the long jump and 100m gold medals she won in Australia after admitting doping and was jailed for lying to federal investigators.

Thanou came in second behind Jones but will not get the 100m gold.

She faces a court case for allegedly making false statements to the police to avoid a drug test at the 2004 Games.

There is no evidence to suggest that Greek sprinter Thanou was on drugs when she was competing against Jones in 2000.

But she and compatriot Kostas Kenteris each missed a drugs test on the eve of the Athens Games.

It was the third time they had missed a test, resulting in a two-year suspension from competition.

The pair claimed they had been involved in a motorcycle accident on their way to the Olympic Village in Greece to be drugs tested.

As a result of this, Thanou was then barred from competing at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing for bringing athletics into disrepute.

The decision to reallocate medals from the Sydney Games means there will be a duplication of silver medals in the 100m.

Third-place finisher Tanya Lawrence moves up to the silver, along with Thanou, and Jamaican Merlene Ottey moves up from fourth to bronze.

In the 200m, Jones' gold will go to Pauline Davis-Thompson of the Bahamas, with Sri Lanka's Susanthika Jayasinghe promoted to second place, and Jamaica's Beverly McDonald, who finished fourth, receiving the bronze medal.

And in the long jump, where Jones finished third, the bronze medal goes to Russia's Tatyana Kotova.

Jones has also been stripped of her 4x400m relay gold medal and her bronze in the 4x100m relay but a decision on whether to reallocate them is still pending.
