Yngling pair reunite for 2012 bid

Sarah Ayton and Pippa Wilson

Olympic gold medal-winners Sarah Ayton and Pippa Wilson have revealed that they will compete in the two-person 470 class at London 2012.

Together with Sarah Webb, they won the Yngling class in Beijing, in a team dubbed the "three blondes in a boat".

But the event will not appear at London 2012 regatta, having been replaced by Elliot 6m boats.

"We love our sport and can't wait to transfer our winning formula into the 470 class," said Wilson.

"Winning gold together is what gets us out of bed in the morning."

Webb now appears unlikely to appear in Weymouth Bay in 2012 having decided to move out of Olympic-classes sailing.

Wilson, 23, already has experience in the class having helmed Skandia Team GBR to seventh position in the 470 World Championships in 2005.

Both sailors favoured continuing their careers in a fleet racing discipline rather than attempting the transition to a match racing format ahead of 2012.

Ayton, who won her first Yngling gold in Athens in 2004 alongside Webb and Shirley Robertson, said Wilson's talent was apparent as soon as she joined the team at the end of 2006.

Pippa Wilson on her partnership with Sarah Ayton
"Her feel for the boat and tactical knowledge was a cut above the rest and I'm excited to be campaigning with her again for 2012," the 28-year-old said.

"This next campaign is going to be tough but I know Pippa and I have what it takes. We are an incredibly strong team who complement each others' skills on and off the water."

Wilson will initially begin the pair's quest for more Olympic success alone with Ayton returning to action in November after the birth of her child.
