Highlights: World Cup qualifying jump-off

British veteran John Whitaker just missed out on winning the London World Cup, losing a jump-of to Australian Olympia debutante Edwina Alexander.

The pair were the only riders in a 35-strong field from 11 countries to jump clear without time faults.

But 34-year-old Alexander had a clear round in the jump-off to claim victory.

Alexander, aboard her Olympics horse Isovlas Itot du Chateau, is now joint-second in the overall European Western League standings.

Switzerland's Steve Guerdat leads with Britain's Ben Maher second.

A capacity Olympia crowd had high hopes of British success but the likes of Tim Stockdale, Robert Whitaker, William Whitaker, William Funnell, Michael Whitaker and Laura Renwick all failed to deliver with a 69-second limit catching everyone out apart from Alexander and Whitaker.

I thought the clear round would be good enough to win, but it wasn't to be

John Whitaker
"It is a World Cup event, and it is about putting pressure on the riders," said Alexander.

"It is my first World Cup win and the first time for me at Olympia. I can't believe it, really.

"John was fast in the jump-off, and I thought I would be better off just trying to jump clear.

"I've had the horse a year, but from the first time I tried him, I had a fantastic feeling about him.

"He has really brought me to a very high level, but he is going to have a holiday for two months now."

Whitaker added: "I thought the clear round would be good enough to win, but it wasn't to be."
