Derry's Paddy Bradley is now Ulster's top marksman

Derry's Paddy Bradley is top of the Ulster hot-shots after his stunning performance against Monaghan. The Glenullin man has leapfrogged over two legends this season to claim the number one spot with 16-191 total. He started the 2009 campaign on 13-177 this season and quickly usurped Peter Canavan as the second highest Ulster hotshot in history with a goal and three points in the quarter-final game against Monaghan. A solitary point in the defeat by Tyrone and two goals and eight points in the second round qualifying game against Monaghan saw Bradley flying past Armagh's points machine Oisin McConville's all-time record of 11-197 (230 points). Two more points in the defeat by Donegal in the third round qualifier sees Bradley now sitting on 238 points with Armagh's Steven McDonnell a distant sixth on 16-136 having only garnered five points this season. Bradley made his Derry debut back in 2000 season. His average is also the highest from the top group, with around five points per game. It was Steven McDonnell who topped the Ulster Championship Hot-Shots for the first time last season. The Armagh points machine notched up 1-17 in his four matches in the 2008 Ulster Championship and followed that up with 0-3 against Tyrone in the 2009 opener to take him up to 182 points and 0-2 in the disappointing defeat by Monaghan and is now level with Cavan's legendary sharp-shooter Peter Donohoe.

However, players like Down legend Doherty did not have the advantage of playing through the 'back door', though he did get to play in 11 Ulster finals and in 44 Championship matches, with an average of 4.5 points per match. As for Canavan, his records are almost identical having played in 49 Championship matches with an average of 4.4 points per game from 1989 to 2005. He played in nine qualifying games, adding 1-25 to his total. Without this, Canavan's career total would be 8-167 (191) which would leave him in fourth place on the list. He played in four less games than Doherty and did not complete a significant number of his Championship matches due to numerous injuries and the odd red card. Last season Monaghan ran away with the Ulster hotshots with Thomas Freeman topping the scoring chart with a 1-15 total.
