Armagh's sharp shooter Oisin McConville has become the top Ulster scorer in the history of the Championship after his two points in Sunday's provincial final win over Donegal at Croke Park.

This includes all games in the Ulster and the All-Ireland Championship and includes the qualifiers.

The 30-year-old Crossmaglen star started the 2006 season in third place but has overtaken Paddy Doherty and Peter Canavan with his 0-19 haul from five games so far.

McConville has been an ever-present in Armagh's last 50 Championship matches, dating back to his debut in 1997 against Tyrone, when he scored 0-8.

He started and completed 46 of the games, was brought on in two and was replaced in two others. He has only failed to score in two of his 50 games.

However, Down great Doherty did not have the advantage of playing through the 'back door', though he did get to play in 11 Ulster Finals and in 44 Championship matches, with an average of 4.5 points per match.

In contrast, McConville has played in six more matches and has exactly the same average return as Doherty, though if you take away his qualifying scores (2-43 from 10 games) then McConville's career total comes down to 8-147 (171).

This would place the Armagh sharpshooter in only seventh place on the all-time list.

As for Canavan, his records are almost identical having played in 49 Championship matches with an average of 4.4 points per game.

NON-QUALIFIER HOTSHOTS
Paddy Doherty 15-159 (204)
Peter Donohoe 17-133 (184)
Sean O'Neill 17-125 (176)
Peter Canavan 8-167 (191)
Sean O'Neill 7-125 (176)
Charlie Gallagher 10-142 (172)
Oisin McConville 8-147 (171)
He played in nine qualifying games, adding 1-25 to his total. Without this, Canavan's career total would be 8-167 (191) which would leave him in fourth place on the list.

He played in four less games than Doherty and did not complete a significant number of his Championship matches due to numerous injuries and the odd red card.

Apart from McConville, the main present-day mover is Derry's Paddy Bradley.

Showing impressive consistency, the Glenullin man has scored 2-28, 2-29 and 2-20 in the last three campaigns, albeit it mainly through the qualifiers.

He is now the top scorer ever from Derry and is young enough to eventually catch McConville, having made his debut in 2000.

His average is also the highest from the top group, with nearly 4.9 points per game
