Cavan suffered a seven-point defeat at the hands of Offaly in their opening NFL Division Three game on Sunday.

Cavan took an early two-point lead but the home side replied with seven unanswered points to lead at half-time.

Cavan started the second half with three consecutive points but two Bernard Allen frees helped put Offaly five points clear at 0-10 to 0-5.

Allen scored the only goal of the game in the 60th minute and Offaly extended their lead to run out easy winners.

A Michael Brennan free and a point from Brendan Fitzpatrick ensured a good start for the Ulster county but Allen and David Egan replied to restore parity.

Ciaran McManus scored three of Offaly's further five points before the interval.

Seanie Johnston and Mark McKeever got their names on the scoresheet as Cavan mounted their mini-revival after the break and Gerard Pierson also contributed points.
