Tyrone's Tommy McGuigan might need surgery on a knee problem

Tyrone attacker Tommy McGuigan is a major doubt for Saturday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Dublin.

McGuigan has not trained since the Ulster final win over Monaghan because of severe swelling on a knee.

He might need surgery in the next few days which would rule him out of the Croke Park clash with the Dubs.

"Tommy is suffering from swelling in his knee, and he may need a little bit of work done on his knee this week," said assistant manager Tony Donnelly.

"When he trains or plays, he suffers from swelling up afterwards. In consultation with the medical people, it looks as if something would need to be done about it.

"And if he has a medical procedure done on it this week, he would be out of contention for this weekend. He has been hampered a good bit by his inability to train."

McGuigan started the provincial final at full-forward in the absence of the injured Stephen O'Neill, but the former footballer of the year has resumed training.

O'Neill's damaged heel has responded well to rest and he is in contention to start on Saturday.

And Tyrone's options have increased with the return of Enda McGinley, who opted out of the squad during the National League in a bid to recover from niggling injuries.

The three-time All-Ireland winner is in line to make his first Championship appearance of the season.

"Enda is in good condition, in good shape and training very well," Donnelly confirmed.
