Classy St Colman's Newry ease to Hogan Cup triumph

St Colman's cruise to an easy victory over St Brendans in the Hogan Cup final at Croke Park

St Colman's Newry clinched the Hogan Cup title by beating St Brendan's Killarney 1-18 to 3-5 at Croke Park.

The Newry school led 0-9 to 1-1 at half-time with the Kerry team's goal coming shortly before the break from a O'Sullivan penalty.

Despite a second O'Sullivan penalty, St Colman's were never in any danger of being caught.

Subs Shay McCartan scored St Colman's goal on 54 minutes before Tom Moriarty's late St Brendan's goal.

Chris Clarke top-scored with five points for Colman's while Colm Stevenson (0-2), Caolan Mooney (0-3) and Jerome Johnston (0-4) were among other players to stand out in an impressive team performance by the winners.

The success was St Colman's eighth Hogan Cup triumph and their first All-Ireland title since 1998.

The Newry school's victory was somewhat marred by a post-match incident which saw two of their supporters being arrested and handcuffed after attempting to get on the pitch.

This followed a flare being thrown on to the pitch.
