Wicklow's Tony Hannon on the ball against Paul Murphy of Down
|
Wicklow's Tony Hannon converted a 45 deep into stoppage time to knock Down out of the All-Ireland Championship. Down had come behind to level only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. Skipper Leighton Glynn's sixth-minute goal put Mick O'Dwyer's team in control in the third round qualifier at Aughrim and they led 1-9 to 0-9 at half-time. Late cores from Ronan Murtagh, Ciaran McGovern and Benny Coulter brought the Mournemen level but they missed chances to grab the lead. The only time they had their noses in front was right at the start through Brendan McArdle's free and a score from play by Dan Gordon. But International Rules star Glynn responded with a point and then shot in the goal after Down's Damien Rafferty had lost the ball in front of the posts A number of frees from Seanie Furlong and Tony Hannon kept Wicklow in front. Daniel Hughes scored three points from play in the first half for Down whose other scores before the interval came from Paul McCumiskey, Timmy Hanna and Ambrose Rogers. Substitute Ronan Sexton, Rogers, McCumiskey (2) and left half-back Conor Garvey scored in the second half for Ross Carr's side but Wicklow continually responded to protect their lead. But then came those three unanswered scores which levelled the contest and the momentum appeared to be with Down. However, a Wicklow attack led to the crucial 45 which Hannon scored into the breeze in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
