John Joe Doherty's side struggled to overcome Carlow last weekend
|
Donegal will be in Sunday's All-Ireland qualifiers draw but it was another unconvincing display against Clare. The home side started brightly, leading 0-4 to 0-1 and 0-6 to 0-3 but keeper Paul Durkin then conceded a penalty which was netted by David Tubridy. Two Christy Toye points helped Donegal lead 0-9 to 1-3 at the break but the midfielder was then stretchered off with a suspected Achilles injury. Donegal held on despite not scoring for 31 minutes in the second half. Colm McFadden and Michael Murphy both scored three points in the opening period and both men were again on target in the second half. McFadden finished with four points while Murphy finally ended Donegal's scoring drought with a late point before the unimpressd 2,000 or so spectators at MacCumhaill Park. After his nervous first half, when he also gifted Clare two further points in addition to conceding the penalty, goalkeeper Durkin was replaced by Michael Boyle at the interval. Toye's injury rounded off a somewhat depressing night for Donegal football - despite their victory. Donegal will be in the hat on Sunday night but on the evidence of this game, their championship involvement is unlikely to be over prolonged.
