Kieran McGeeney's Kildare side put Cork under intense late pressure
|
Cork endured a tense finish before edging Kildare 2-11 to 1-11 in Sunday's All-Ireland Football quarter-final.
The Munster Champions looked home and dry at Croke Park when John Hayes and Michael Cussen hit early goals.
Cork were 2-9 to 0-6 up when Kildare's Ronan Sweeney had a 48th-minute penalty saved by Alan Quirke.
However, John Doyle's 69th-minute penalty cut the lead to three and Kildare's Dermot Earley had a last-gasp goal chance which was blocked.
Cork will wonder how they allowed Kildare to get back into the contest as the Rebels appeared in complete control for most of the contest.
They led 2-4 0-1 after the two early goals and a rout appeared on the cards at that stage.
Certainly, Cork's lacklustre second-half display is unlikely to have worried rejuvenated Kerry - their All-Ireland semi-final opponents.
