Fermanagh made their All-Ireland Championship exit after a dismal performance against Kildare in Sunday's third round qualifier at Croke Park.

The Erne men hit 10 wides and Kildare had three plus a missed penalty before Padraig O'Neill opened the scoring for the Lilywhites in the 25th minute.

Eamon Maguire fisted over and Ryan Keenan scored from play as Fermanagh trailed 0-3 to 0-2 at half-time.

Fermanagh wilted and five unanswered points secured Kildare's progress.

It was five points to four when James Kavanagh, John Doyle (2), Emmett Bolton and substitute Daryl Flynn put Kildare well clear.

KIldare's penalty came on 15 minutes when Doyle was hauled down by Fermanagh keeper Ronan Gallagher.

Doyle's penalty was a weak kick and Gallagher saved.

It was a let-off for Fermanagh but they could not take advantage.

After their defeat in the Ulster final replay against Armagh seven days eariler, it was another depressing afternoon for Fermanagh.

Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney:

"It was not a great game to watch. There were two nervous teams looking to get into the last eight.

"There was some decent football around the middle but the shooting was poor.

"We kept calm and did better in the second half but there may be people looking forward to the draw hoping to get us."

Fermanagh manager Malachy O'Rourke:

"We are bitterly disappointed. After last week's defeat in the Ulster final, we thought we had regrouped well and would put in a big performance.

"Those early wides maybe had a draining effect on the team.

"We have worked hard all year on shooting and if you do not take your chances at this level you are going to be in trouble.

"Two weeks ago there was so much hope in the county and people were positive because of performances up to that stage.

"But that is football. We expected a big performance today but it did not happen."
