Two goals from Michael Murphy and another from Championship debutant Stephen Griffin helped Donegal to a convincing qualifier win at Ballybofey.
Donegal netted twice inside the opening eight minutes but a Karl Mannion penalty revived Roscommon's hopes.
Roscommon had Cathal Cregg sent-off before the break and in the second half Jonathan Dunning (Roscommon) and Neil McGee (Donegal) were also red-carded.
Murphy got his second goal from a penalty to ensure Donegal's progress.
Roscommon kept going to the end but Donegal were simply too strong for them.
The Connacht county were just 2-3 to 1-4 behind at the interval with their points coming from Ger Heneghan (2), Mannion and Senan Kilbride.
Colm McFadden landed three points for Donegal in the second half.
