Liam Doyle has been ruled out of Down's All-Ireland Senior Football Championship campaign with a knee injury which he sustained last Sunday.
A scan has revealed that the centre half-back requires surgery and the ligament damage will sideline him for the rest of this year.
Doyle missed the whole of last season because of a series of injuries but returned to county action this term.
Down face Offaly in an All-Ireland qualifier at Tullamore on 19 July.
Doyle is noted as a prolific marksman from free-kicks and posted 14 points during the NFL campaign.
He contributed seven crucial scores from frees during the marathon Ulster SFC first round tie against Tyrone, over two matches.
He suffered the knee injury after 20 minutes of the Ulster SFC semi-final against Armagh.
