Derry lost 2-28 to 1-12 to Kildare in their Christy Ring Cup Group 2D opener at Newbridge on Saturday afternoon.
A Tony Murphy goal helped the Lilywhites to an eight-point interval lead, with Sam Dodds finding the net for the Oak Leafers.
Michael Divilly kept up the momentum for the hosts with a goal early in the second half and Kildare ended with nine different players on the scoresheet.
The match was Andy Comerford's first Christy Ring Cup game as manager.
Oak Leaf captain Kevin Hinphey and top scorer Ruairi Convery were on the bench for the match.
Hinphey was recovering from injury and Convery was struggling with flu so Sean Leo McGoldrick and Paddy McCloskey were their replacements in attack.
Oak Leaf manager Brian McGilligan brought Conor McKenna and Sam Dodds into the half-forward line.
Midfielder Niall Holley and defender Christopher McKeague also came in.
Derry: A Magill; R McCloskey, C Quinn, M Craig; S McCullagh, S Henry, C McKeague; O McCloskey, N Holley; S Dodds, SL McGoldrick, C McKenna; P Henry, P McCloskey, G Kelly.
